Round the Wicket – The WBCC weekly newsletter

View from the Chair

Welcome to our newly named Round the Wicket weekly newsletter!

Hopefully the summer isn’t already over but some very welcome rain for all our gardens and for the outfield at Stamford Road, but uncovered wickets don’t like rain and the scores across the leagues all took a significant drop at the weekend.

This week, I’d like to point out the volunteer roles that we still need filling. If anyone feels able to give up a couple of Saturday afternoons during the season to umpire for our open age teams, it would be massively appreciated. We are also short of scorers on a couple of Saturdays. Cricket just doesn’t work without umpires and scorers, so please get in contact if you feel you can help.

We also still need someone to fulfil the Head of Finance role – I was asked a question about our finances this week and I couldn’t give an answer, as we currently don’t have any significant reporting, so if you are an accountant and can spare one or two hours a week to help us, that would be amazing.

It may well be half-term, but we have junior fixtures every day, junior training is still happening on Friday and Sunday and then a full set of open age fixtures at the weekend. We are then just a week away from the President’s Fun Day on Sunday 8th June. A LOT is planned for that day (see below) and brilliant raffle prizes are now coming in, including a personalised signed shirt from Mary Earps the (now retired) England goalkeeper! If you haven’t bought tickets yet, please do so – all money raised from the day will be going to Maggie’s.

Have a great week.

Cheers

Jon

Open Age Cricket

Three out of six this weekend.

The 1st team had two league games, one on Saturday against Clifton Village and one on Monday against Gedling & Sherwood. A very close loss on Saturday, with the winning runs scored with only 2 balls to go after the game had been set up well at half-way after a quick-fire 50 from 33 balls from Dave Lucas and an amazing 66 extras got us to 264-9 from 50 overs. Clifton were then 137-6 in reply but their No 8 managed to score a match winning 87* to take them home.

On Monday, a brilliant 83 from Dan Hill, with great support from Sam Bennett (45) got us to a very competitive 242-9 from 50 overs and G&S had no answer to any of our bowlers, which included debutant Luke Storrar, and were bowled out for 135. This puts the team 3rd in the league and in a very strong position, seven games into the season.

The 2nd team restricted Keyworth to 195 all out, with Luke Storrar returning figures of 9-0-44-3. Unfortunately, the Keyworth bowlers had the upper hand and we were bowled out for 126, with no significant scores, but there’s always next week.

The 3rd team were confident at half-time after bowling Attenborough out for 109 at Adbolton Lane, with Callum Tindall and Dom Evans both getting 3 wickets. But the uncovered wicket proved too challenging and we only managed to get to 78, with Ian Huskinson (39) and Dom Evans (13) the only batters to get into double figures!

However, the better news was that both the 4th team and 5th teams won and both quite easily. The 4s were away at Stapleford and skittled them for 77, with Oli Sheard (3 for 9) and Warren Dundas-Starr (5-13) being the pick of the bowlers. Warren’s 5-fer means another £50 for Maggies! Finn Lambert Hurley then led the batting attack with 38* as the total was knocked off in 16 overs.

Finally, the 5th team batted first and although they were bowled out in 31 overs, still managed to accumulate 187 runs, with maiden club 50s for both Sam Brewington (59) and Mohsin Yaqub (70 from 43 balls!). We then bowled Notts and Arnold out for 151 with another 5-fer (therefore another £50 for Maggies!) from Atharva Lanjekar with astonishing figures of 5.4-2-6-5, to take the victory and continue the unbeaten start to the season.

We’ve already raised £250 for Maggie’s from excellent batting and bowling performances!

Diary dates for June

June is nearly upon us and there’s a lot going on in addition to training and games!

Following the success of Falafel Baffle, on Friday 6th June, Malaysian street food vendor Syiok_Lah will be at Stamford Road.

The Thornbridge Tap Takeover is starting on Thursday 5th June and running through to Sunday 8th June which will also see the inaugural WBCC President’s Fun Day. Plans are well underway with everything kicking off at 12 noon with the Parent & Child pairs cricket competition. The 200 Degrees vs Sponsors Allstars T20 game kicks off at 2pm and throughout the day there will be a BBQ, charity raffle (with prizes coming in fast, including a personalised signed shirt by Mary Earps), various inflatable fun games and entertainment for the crowds.

All are welcome and the bar will be open all day.

On Saturday 21st June, we are looking to hold a cocktails evening at the club, so look out for details of that in the coming days and then finally, there will be a charity uplift bar on Friday 27th June, where all bar prices will be increased by 20%, for one night only.

All money raised at the WBCC President’s Fun Day and the charity uplift bar evening will go to Maggie’s, our charity of the year.

Newsletter named!

Thanks to everyone who suggested newsletter names from those who put all their energy into just one name to those who were clearly inspired and suggested many! Suggested by Chris Robinson, ‘Round the Wicket’ was the name chosen by the committee from a shortlist. Some WBCC branded gear will be making its way to the Robinson household!

Do you have some time to support the club?

There are several ways you can get involved with West Bridgfordians, whether you fancy being on the field in a white coat, keeping score, just lending a hand for a match or two or managing our money.

We need 3rd XI umpires

Our search for umpires for our 3rd XI is still ongoing. The league they play in (SNCL Division E) has an umpire bonus point system, so for every game where we have an umpire, we’ll gain an extra point.

For each game you umpire, we’ll pay you £40, and you’ll also get a free tea if the game is at home.

If you’re interested in umpiring at some point this season, even if it’s just for one game, please get in touch with our 3rd team captain, Dom Evans, via email or on 07837 966799.

Could you be our Head of Finance?

We’re still hunting for an accountant to become our Head of Finance. If you have an hour or two a week to spare and you’d be willing to help us out with your expertise, please take a look at the role description below and get in touch.

Occasional scorers wanted

If you like keeping track of the game and have some Saturdays free, becoming an occasional scorer for us could be a great way to contribute.

For each match you score, we’ll pay you £30, and you’ll get a free tea when the game is at home.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, please contact Justine Robinson.

Help our 6th XI develop

We’re looking for adult volunteers to support our 6th XI on Sunday afternoons. This team is really important for us, as it helps at least seven of our Under-18 players make the step up to senior Saturday cricket.

We need more adult volunteers to get involved – it doesn’t have to be every match, even just one or two during the season would make a difference.

Whether you’re keen to play alongside our young talent or you’re at the ground with your child and can help with setting up, we’d love to hear from you.

If you’re interested in getting involved with the 6th XI, please get in touch with our team captain, John Spragg, via email or on 07305 932451.

If you can spare some time and any of these roles sound interesting, please reach out using the contact details provided. We’d really appreciate your support!

No break for junior cricket training

Junior cricket training will take place on Friday 30th May and Sunday 1st June.

 Are games and training on?

Yes! Unless we tell you otherwise. If we have to cancel either training or games, we will communicate (via email and socials) so if you don’t hear from us, please turn up for training or games as usual.
