View from the Chair

On Saturday evening, we had our annual Pie Night (previously known as Volunteers Night) to thank all the amazing people that work behind the scenes at the club. This year we invited 99 volunteers and their partners, so hopefully next year we will get over the magical 100 mark.
As well as the great pies provided by Owen Taylor, we also had a charity auction with 5 lots and raised £645 for Maggie’s, which was way above expectations. Then, as the beer & wine flowed, someone had the idea of an impromptu karaoke session and although there were some less tuneful voices, there were also quite a few surprisingly tuneful ones – which bodes well for when we put on a full karaoke night later in the season – keep checking social media for that one!!
Thank you to Carole and the kitchen crew for getting all the pies, chips, peas and gravy out so efficiently. Thank you to all the auction winners for your generosity and thank you to all our karaoke singers!
This week we have two cup finals – the U10s and the 3rd team are both in their respective county cup finals. The U10s are down at Stamford Road on Tuesday night and the 3rd team have to travel to the other side to Nottingham to play at Goosedale on Wednesday night – let’s hope the weather holds out for both of them and GO WELL!
Have a good week, everybody and I hope the weather is better than forecasted.
Cheers
Jon

Women’s team secures a quarter final spot
Congratulations to the Women’s softball team for making it to the quarter-finals of the East Midlands Softball Cup.
They put a good score of 286 on the board that Cavaliers and Carrington were unable to beat, falling short by 40 runs. It was a great overall performance by the team, who kept the fielding tight and stopped boundaries wherever possible. In particular, Archana Kamat shone, bowling or catching 7 of the 9 wickets taken.

A massive well done to the team and good luck to them for the quarter-final!
The team also finished in the top 2 of the Central East Division and landed a place a the regional finals day on Sunday 14th September.

Clear up after your dogs
Several of you will have witnessed the disgusting situation on Friday evening when a dog decided to do their business on the patio area right outside the door into the clubhouse. Unfortunately, although this was brought to the club’s attention, by the time someone got out there to cover it up, it had already been stood in and spread around the area.
We do not want to ban dogs from the ground, but this situation can not be repeated. Club volunteers had to clear up the mess. If you bring your dog to the ground, please have the decency to clear up after them, as the majority of dog owners do.

Open Age Cricket
A far better weekend than last weekend, with only the 2nd team losing a completed game of cricket, although there were so many closely fought games.
The 1st team one by 1 wicket in the last over of the game, with Shah Zia taking home the player of the match award with 3-29 and a match winning knock of 41* from 32 balls to see us over the line.
The 3rd team recovered from being 0-2 from the first over to post 181-7 from their 45 overs, with Warren Dundas-Starr anchoring the innings with a fine 46*. In reply WB Legion couldn’t get to grips with our miserly bowlers and the game was basically over when they were 40-6 from 22 overs. The 3s in the end won by 37 runs.
The 4th team had a mid-tabled 40 pointer against Burton Joyce and very much came out on top. They bowled them out for 101 in only 27 overs (Noah Tomkins – 4-12) and then knocked them off for the loss of only 1 wicket, with skipper Tom Godfrey steering them home with a patient 67*.
Unfortunately, the 2s managed to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory after posting a very credible 289-4 from a revised 45 overs, with Ian Huskinson hitting a wonderful 101* (another £50 for Maggie’s) and Joe Holding showing the world he can bat with a belligerent 86 from only 45 balls. When Notts Unity were 115-3 from 25 overs, the asking rate had risen to 8.75/over. But the opposition #5 then proceeded to hit 103* from only 51 balls to take them home with 2.5 overs to spare.
The 5th team were due to be playing at home against Bryon Abbey, but we had to concede the game as the ground wasn’t fit. There was bound to be at least one situation that occurred this season at the new Farnborough Road ground and this week was that one – sincere apologies have been sent to both teams and the league.
