The 2021 season has drawn to a close, the pitch renovations have been completed and the clubhouse has been handed over to the rugby club. So how did we do in 2021?
The 1st XI had a simple objective and that was to finish in the top 5 of Division A and therefore secure a place in the new Premier League Division 2. Covid isolations had put a spanner in the works of our search for a professional player, but late in the day we secured the services of former Pakistan international Saad Naseem. More Covid turmoil saw Saad miss the first game of the season, an amazing tie with Belvoir at Stamford Road with both teams sharing 662 runs! There were hiccups along the way when wins became losses but also when losses became wins, especially when Saad’s 103* off 35 balls demoralised Calverton who looked set for a win. The top 5 had decent seasons with Ally Pettit winning the Div A batting award but Rhys, Winnie and Trav all made contributions before Saad found his feet. Eventually a last day winning draw saw 4th place secured to everyone’s relief.
The 1st XI generally took to the field with 2 x U16s, an U15 and an U14, every game of the season. A superb achievement for the club.
The 2nd XI finished in a disappointing 6th place in Division D after being in the top 5 all summer. Some poor performances against teams near the bottom ultimately cost them the points they needed. During the season the 2s beat the teams finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th so the talent is there!
The 3rd team were flying high at the mid point of the league, but the usual selection issues cost them and they went on a long run of losses to eventually finish in 7th spot in Division G.
It was generally accepted that the 4th team would struggle in Division K but they also finished 7th.
We also had a development team playing on a Sunday which was a great way for the U13s to get some game time in a stronger environment and some of the stand outs made the move to the 4th and 3rd XIs during the season.
